A Little History

In 1982, Paul Miller with two of his sons started a business in fine woodcrafting.  As his other sons finished school, they joined the family business – in all six.  In 1998, the father decided to move so the five sons bought the business from him.  The main focus was custom-built cabinetry for kitchen and bath.  However, they also made furniture and custom woodwork.  For 23 years they thrived in the work; then the brothers amicably decided to go in different directions and the business was dissolved.

Eddie thought he would not go back into that type of work but after a few years realized how much he liked and missed working with wood.  So, in the autumn of 2007, he started Miller Woodworks.

Custom Cabinetry – Why?

What makes the added expense of custom cabinetry a good investment?  Most people realize that a beautiful, well-appointed kitchen increases the resale value of any home, more so than any other room in a house.  In addition, people associate the Mennonite or Amish communities with quality-built items; Eddie Miller's craftsmanship is a sterling example of why this is true.

Eddie is happy to work with home owners, contractors or interior designers to make sure the color and design of your cabinets are aesthetically pleasing.  There are so many beautiful woods from which to choose – walnut, cherry, maple, hickory, birch, oak – just to name a few.  Using his years of experience, he is able to make suggestions regarding the choice of wood and the effective use of space, pantries, islands, desks, measurements, and so much more.  Of course, he provides free estimates.

Remodeling?  Many older homes have rooms that are of unusual sizes or that have fallen victim to alterations made by previous owners who did not have practical ideas.  Maximize use of your space with custom-made cabinets rather than those that are ‘out-of-the-box’.

About the Construction

Just as it is the foundation that makes a home strong, the hidden components make a cabinet strong and durable.

The boxes are of ¾” Birch plywood, not particle board.  Each cabinet has a ¾” solid wood face frame put together using pocket hole joinery. Finished ends are, by your choice, either solid wood panels or real wood veneer.  Concealed hinges with the ‘soft-close’ feature are used to prevent damage from slammed doors.  Doors can be made in a wide variety of different profiles to match the style of your home.

Only high-quality all-wood components are used, such as drawer boxes made of Poplar that are dovetailed.  These have full-extension undermounts also with the ‘soft-close’ feature.  Maple wood ‘Lazy Susan’ corner inserts have steam-bent rims.  Cutlery trays and spice racks are also of wood; they are not plastic inserts.  Even the waste basket pull-outs are dove-tailed drawer boxes.

The stains and finishes are hand-mixed and applied first by wiping stain, then sealing the wood, sanding, and applying the final varnish.  Hardware – the finishing touch – also comes in a large selection including solid brass pulls and knobs.

Interior Wood Trim & Doors

Whether you want a standard interior door or trim work or all custom-made items, Miller Woodworks will be able to provide something just right for your unique home.  Whichever you select, he will paint and finish the pieces using a catalyzed conversion varnish in ’20 sheen' (a semi-gloss) which makes a good, hard finish that is both lustrous and long-lasting.

Delivery & Installation

He has made custom-built cabinets for many homes in Ohio and surrounding states.  He has even been called upon to go as far as Chicago and to Tennessee and Texas!  You will be delighted with the conscientious way your cabinetry, interior doors or trim is installed.

Handcrafted Furniture – Future Family Heirlooms

Freestanding pieces such as library tables, cedar-lined blanket chests, entertainment centers, office furniture (desks, credenzas, file cabinets, cabinets, etc.), book shelves, hutches and sideboards, and built-ins are among the many fine furniture items made by Miller Woodworks.

This furniture can last lifetimes and is sure to become a treasured family heirloom.  Of course, all fine furniture must be treated with care and given attention such as cleaning and polishing to maintain its appearance and functionality.

Visit the Shop – Watch the Work

There is nothing like watching a true artisan working at his craft.  Visitors are welcome to visit the shop located in northern Perry county, Ohio, to take in the fragrant woods and see the cabinets being constructed.  Please call or Contact Miller Woodworks online to schedule a visit.

Bunk Beds

Recently, Eddie agreed to make the bunk beds advertised by 1800BUNKBED.  There are seven styles from which to choose such as the traditional bunk bed, a loft bed, a trundle bed, a twin over a double, etc.  He also makes drawers to fit under the beds; they are on casters so they slide out for easy cleaning.  Made from pine, the beds, drawers and other pieces are sturdy and durable yet inexpensive (other woods are available as custom orders).  These are beds that you will want to hand down from generation to generation.

Hours:

Monday-Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Saturday by Appointment; Please, NO SUNDAY CALLS.
