Marietta Run Clay Bed & Breakfast :: Pottery Weekend

When visiting the Athens area, be sure to schedule a trip to the pottery where you can enjoy wheel-throwing technique demonstrations or learn to make and paint your own.  Register for weekend-long pottery workshops and accommodations starting at $ 500.

The first day includes check-in to the bed and breakfast where, although being treated as a treasured guest, you will feel like part of the family.  Then it is down to the pottery!  Susan starts the workshop by giving a very informative tour of the pottery and the entire process - from mixing the clay, to shaping or throwing on the wheel, trimming and drying to painting, glazing and firing.  Next, you will roll up your sleeves and get to work, learning to center the clay on the wheel and make a pot or two.  After a good day’s work, you will have a chance to relax while Susan prepares a gourmet meal – perhaps chicken marbella and freshly baked bread with homemade butter or spread.  Weather permitting, guests can dine on the covered back porch, overlooking a peaceful pond.

Day two will start with a wonderful breakfast, beautifully presented, perhaps some farm-fresh eggs and just-from-the-oven scones topped with cream or jam.  Then, off again to the pottery for a day of intensive work to learn throwing, trimming, slab work, decoration and painting, finishing techniques, and more!  After the busy day, you will once again feast on a delicious meal made with produce from Susan’s own garden or something she found at the Athen’s Farmers Market.

The third day... another scrumptious breakfast.  Susan says that all her guests have asked to either watch her cook or even to help in the kitchen.  'Of course,’ she says!  Then it is back to the pottery to put on finishing touches and pick glazes for the items you have made.  Every piece will be useable art that is food-, oven- and dishwasher-safe.

Susan has been a potter for more than 35 years.  She is a natural teacher and you will benefit greatly from her expertise.  Fulfill a dream to create art with clay!  Call for reservations.

Hours:

Daily and Tours by Appointment

Susan gives a free lesson to anyone who comes for a shop tour.  When folks visit, she gives them a complete tour; she shows how the clay is made, how to throw on the wheel, and how pots are fired and decorated.
