eHonks Newsletter -
January 2012
Greetings,
Why is it children love bunk
beds? And why does everyone view for the top bunk? I
remember wishing I had a sister so we could have bunk beds!
Well, I didn't get a sister but that does bring me to…

This month's featured
Showcase Listing:
Miller Woodworks
For many years, Eddie Miller
has been handcrafting fine furniture - library tables,
cedar-lined blanket chests, entertainment centers, desks,
credenzas, book shelves, hutches and sideboards. These are
just a few of the things made by Miller Woodworks that are
sure to become family heirlooms.
NEW!
Bunk Beds
Recently, Eddie agreed to
make the bunk beds advertised by 1800BUNKBED. There are
seven styles from which to choose such as the traditional
bunk bed, a loft bed, a trundle bed, a twin over a double,
etc. He also makes drawers to fit under the beds; they are
on casters so they slide out for easy cleaning. Made from
pine, the beds, drawers and other pieces are sturdy and
durable yet inexpensive (other woods are available as custom
orders). These are beds that you will want to hand down
from generation to generation.
Custom-Made Cabinets
Many people consider
custom-made cabinets for new homes but not for an older
home. However, it is the older home that may have rooms of
unusual dimensions or that has been the victim of previous
owners who did not have practical ideas. Eddie can use his
years of experience to help you maximize use of space with
custom-made cabinets rather than those that are
'out-of-the-box'.

Snopes.com ~ Rumor Has It
http://www.snopes.com
You have probably received by
email unbelievable stories that friends have forwarded. The
truth is sometimes a strange thing, but how does one know if
the content of emails is true? For example, did NASA
scientists really discover a lost day of time? Was a
pregnant woman accused of shoplifting a basketball? Is beef
sold for human consumption being injected with ammonia? The
answers are no, yes and yes.
Touted as 'the definitive
Internet reference source for urban legends, folklore,
myths, rumors and misinformation'. Before you forward that
email to everyone in your address book, check out Snopes!
Stop, You're Killing Me!
http://www.stopyourekillingme.com
For me, winter has always
been a time to cocoon under a blanket on the couch or in a
chair by the fireplace with a stack of books to read during
the early dark hours. If, like me, you like a good mystery,
be sure to check out...
A web site to die for... if
you love mysteries. "Stop, You're Killing Me" catalogs over
3,700 authors with chronological lists of their books (my
favorite feature). Another nice feature is the Search by

not the author. If looking for a new author to read, check
out the Read-Alikes section. I hope you find this site to
be useful.
Mystery Weekend
Sherlock Homes & The Case
of the Unraveling Strand
Speaking of mysteries, what
is a mystery without Sherlock Holmes? The game is afoot!
During this weekend-long performance, the audience gets

What Fun!
White Chocolate Popcorn
Balls
8 oz white chocolate, chopped
4 c popped popcorn
4 tbl rainbow colored sprinkles
Lollipop sticks
Line two 12-muffin muffin pans by
placing a sheet of plastic wrap over the pan and pushing down into
the cups slightly.
In a double boiler over barely
simmering water, melt the chopped chocolate, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat and
carefully stir in the popcorn to coat it evenly with
melted chocolate. Working quickly, take off large spoonfuls of
coated popcorn and form into a loose ball the size of a golf ball.
Place it in the cup of the lined muffin pans to rest and sprinkle
with the colored sprinkles. Insert a lollipop stick in the bottom
and let it set up. To hasten set-up, place pans in a cool
place or in the
refrigerator. These can be wrapped in colored cellophane with
twisted ends. Store at room temperature.

And speaking of lotion, is that bottle on your shelf...
Body Lotion or a Chemical
Soup?
Consumer Reports has a
free e-newsletter, Greener Choices. One
article,
"What's in Your Body Lotion? Ingredients to Avoid"
(November 2011 issue), caught my eye. It says “Consumer
Reports ShopSmart Magazine ran tests... on lotion formulas from Aveeno, CeraVe, Cetaphil, Eucerin, Gold Bond,
Jergens, Lubriderm, Nivea, Suave, Vaseline, and store
brands from CVS, Target, Walgreens, and Walmart”.
The article commented,
“testers were surprised at the number of ingredients... some
containing as many as 33 different chemicals.” It
continues, “Many chemicals commonly used in personal-care
products have been shown to be potentially irritating, or to
cause health problems in animal studies. Be aware of the
following ingredients in some lotions, especially if you
have sensitive skin.”
·
Diazolindinyl Urea or DMDM Hydantoin
·
Diethanolamine or Triethanolamine
·
Fragrance
or Farnesol
·
Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate
·
Parabens
·
Retinyl
Palmitate
·
Titanium
Dioxide
Sadly, it can be
cost-prohibitive to ‘go green’! I am happy to say that
we have a very inexpensive ‘green’ alternative to
commercially-prepared body lotions.

July 2011
Greetings,
I have been and will be spending a lot of time in a medical
office waiting room. I decided to use the time searching
the available magazines for interesting web sites, places of
interest, recipes, realistic and inexpensive decorating
tips, and ideas for this newsletter. One fun idea I found
is to keep a…
House Diary
Get an attractive journal, one that will lie flat when open is good.
When people visit, have them write in it a blurb about their
visit to your home… the reason they came, part of a
memorable conversation, or even draw a picture. Remember to
date entries. Include your own notes, writing as though you
are the house, such as, ‘I kept my people safe and dry
during storm winds that reached 50 miles per hour’. Have
fun with it! When it is full, store it away and
put out a new one. Years from now you will enjoy going
back through the diary to remember good times with good
friends.

Marietta Run Clay Bed & Breakfast:
Pottery Weekend
Fulfill
your dream to learn the art of pottery! Receive
one-on-one instruction at this three-day workshop and enjoy
a weekend get-away in the scenic foothills of southeast
Ohio.
The first day includes check-in to the bed and breakfast
where, although being treated as a treasured guest, you will
feel like part of the family. Next, down to the pottery to
see the entire process. You will learn to center the clay
on the wheel and make a pot or two. After a good day’s work
you will have a chance to relax while Susan prepares a
gourmet meal – perhaps chicken marbella. Dine on the
covered back porch, overlooking a peaceful pond.
The second day will start with a wonderful breakfast,
beautifully presented, perhaps some farm-fresh eggs and
just-from-the-oven scones topped with cream or homemade
butter and jams. Then, off again to the pottery for a day
of intensive work to learn throwing, trimming, slab work,
decoration and painting, finishing techniques and more!
After a busy day, you will once again feast on a delicious
meal made from produce from Susan’s own garden or something
she found at the Athen’s Farmers Market.

Begin the third day with another scrumptious breakfast.
Susan says that all her guests have asked to either watch
her cook or even to help in the kitchen. ‘Of course,’ she
says! Then it is back to the pottery to put on finishing
touches and pick glazes for the items you have made. Every
piece will be useable art that is food-, oven- and
dishwasher-safe. Click here to read more about

Olive Garden's
Zuppa Toscana
1 lb. Italian Sausage
2 lg. Russet baking potatoes, sliced in half, then into
¼” slices
1 lg. onion, chopped
½ can Oscar Meyer Real Bacon Bits
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 c. kale or Swiss chard, chopped
2 14.5-oz. cans chicken broth
1 qt. water
1 c. heavy whipping cream
Cook sausage in a
300-degree oven, baking approx 30 minutes, drain on
paper towels then cut into thin slices. Meanwhile,
place onions, potatoes, chicken broth, water and garlic
in large pot, cook on medium heat until potatoes are
done. Add sausage, bacon, salt and pepper to taste,
simmer for another 10 minutes. Turn to low heat, add
kale and cream. Heat through and serve.
Suggestions: You may
wish to add about a half teaspoon of fennel seeds.
There may already be enough fennel seeds in the Italian
sausage, but a little extra adds flavor. I prefer to
cook and drain my own bacon, but the bacon bits are
easier. Try substituting cauliflower for the
potatoes as a low-carb alternative.

eHonks Newsletter -
March 2011
Greetings,
It seems I never leave the
house without a getting a little donkey snot, dog slobber,
mud or hay on my clothes. But I doubt if I would be
forgiven if I dared leave the farm without rubbing each of
four little donkeys' silky-soft noses and petting Rupert's
big, square head!
Many of our visitors tell us
they enjoy the donkeys and hearing stories about them. So,
I am going to stray from the usual layout of eHonks
Newsletter and tell you about the...
Miniature Donkeys at
Long Time Ago Farm
Spring is around the corner
and the donkeys are demanding more attention. I do not mean
demand out of necessity. Well sure, there are a few
necessary things like having their hooves trimmed
(yesterday) and their teeth floated (soon). What I mean is
they verbally demand attention - they might be little, but
they are loud! They want brushing, petting and treats, not
necessarily in that order.
Donkey 'Pedicures'
Yesterday,
the farrier, Mike Blackburn, came to the farm. The
donkeys love getting their 'pedicures'. The hooves are
picked, checked for abscesses, white line disease, bruising
or damage, then trimmed and filed. Nettie and
Mullie get fidgety but they enjoy the attention.
Sage and Rocket Man have no worries.
Mike is excellent with the
donkeys and they like him, so he must be alright! Donkeys
are an excellent judge of character, so you know he will be
good with your horses, mules or donkeys. Mike works in
southern and southeast Ohio and northern Kentucky. He is a
graduate of Oklahoma Horseshoeing School and is BWFA
certified. If you are in need of a farrier's service, he
can be reached by phone (307) 399-3058.
Miniature Mediterranean
Donkeys

When you think of a donkey
you probably picture a little grey animal with large ears
and a skinny tail with a tuft of hair at the end; you might
even know that it has a dorsal stripe. They also have
horizontal stripes at the middle of the ears and across the
knees. You may not know there are breeds of donkeys the
same as there are breeds of dogs. We have two breeds on our
farm. Three, Nettie, Mullie and Rocket Man, are
Miniature Mediterranean donkeys (also known as Sicilian
donkeys). They are what you
probably have in mind. Our Sage is different, she is a Baudet du Poitou.
The Baudet du Poitou
Donkey
Sage is a beautiful example
of the breed with all the Poitou's unique characteristics:
long, soft, dark brown shaggy coat that curls and will hang
in dreadlocks; a thin but long mane that hangs only to one
side; a tail with much more hair on it than has the
Mediterranean; a very large head with exceptionally long
ears from with grows long hair; hooves that are more laid
back than upright. They also have a different number
of chromosomes, pelvic shape,
different
hair
and skin textures. Her personality is quite different from
the others; she is extremely sedate but confident and kind,
she is also quite mischievous.
Because of those outward
differences, the Poitou breed is easily recognizable yet is
the least known and the most endangered. It is still on the
ALBC-USA's (American Livestock Breeders Conservancy)
conservation priority list as a "critical" species. In 1977
there were only 44 Poitou donkeys worldwide! Today, the
estimate is about 600 and that includes full- and
part-breed.
As I finished writing this, I
realized we do not have one good picture of Sage! There are
parts of her in many photos but none that shows off her
differences. She is the brown donkey in the picture above.
I will make it a priority to get some good pictures of her
and get them on the web site.

1 tbl. sliced chives
2 tsp. Dijon mustard
black pepper
cayenne pepper
1 lemon wedge
paprika
Place eggs in large pot,
cover with water and bring to a boil over high heat,
boil 5 minutes. Remove from heat, cover and let stand
10 minutes, drain. Cover eggs with ice water and let
stand until cool enough to handle the eggs (ice water
helps separate the shell from the hot eggs making them
easier to peel).
Peel eggs, halve
lengthwise, scoop yolks into a mixing bowl. Mash the
yolks, mix in crème fraîche, mustard (hold back a little
of the mustard until you see how thick the mixture is,
it shouldn’t be too runny). Once the lumps are out,
briskly mix in the smoked salmon and chives. Season to
taste with black and cayenne peppers. Spoon the yolk
mixture into the egg white halves. Garnish with a
squeeze of lemon and paprika.

eHonks Newsletter -
December 2010
Greetings,
In the past, I've written to friends and sent little stories
about the antics of our donkeys and other goin's-on at the
farm - the raccoon in the cellar, a bat in the house, a
toe-biting mouse, the dog-goring deer and cat-eating
coyotes, the car sinking in a natural spring, the great bull
escape.
Several have told me they look forward to reading these.
So I started a blog and will be adding old and new stories
plus updates related to LongTimeAgoFarm.com and
DonkeyHonk.com. There isn't much content on it yet but
please check back now and then, save the link below to your
Favorites/Bookmarks.

Getting Good Deals
Many of us are taking advantage of online deals during this
shopping season, but what about the rest of the year?
There are plenty of sites offering promotion and free
shipping codes. They usually require you register with
them and some ask for personal information.
How do you know which ones are legit? It isn't always
easy to find out. I want to share with you two sites
that are legitimate and can be used year-round.
Ebates - Online Rebates and Coupons
Remember the little man on the Monopoly game cards? He is
now the mascot for Ebates, an online rebate center. I’ve
used it for about 5-6 years, maybe longer, and have never
had a problem; every three months a check is sent
automatically. If you’re buying things online anyway, it's
a great deal.
What
I especially like about it is the rebate is applied even if
you use another discount code. First, go to Ebates,
(important to remember because you cannot get the rebate if
you do not go through Ebates), select a merchant, then
do your shopping.
There are over a thousand stores on Ebates – Advance Auto
Parts, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Dick Blick Art Materials,
Disney Store, Fashion Bug, Gander Mountain, GAP, Half.com,
Just My Size, Kodak, Lands’ End, Lee Jeans, Nordstrom,
Office Max, Old Navy, Sears, TicketsNow, Walgreens, just to
name a few.
When you register and make a first purchase, you receive an
additional $ 5.00 back. I hope you can take advantage of
it, plus their Deals of the Week and Daily Double offers!

FreeShipping.org & Free Shipping
Day

FreeShipping.org
is a site on which you can find promotional codes for free
shipping and discounts throughout the year. You are
not required to register. Codes can be used even if
you do not receive a newsletter or catalog from a merchant.
Did you miss Cyber Monday? No worries!
Friday, December 17 is the third annual
Free Shipping Day organized by FreeShipping.org. On that day over 1,000
online merchants are offering free shipping with delivery
promised by
December 24. I am happy to say that
LongTimeAgoFarm.com is one of those!

Thor, stylized Friesian
This month's give-away is a detailed woodcut of "Thor", a

with this piece handcrafted from Baltic Birch wood. It
is slightly bigger the one found on the
All Things Equine page of LongTimeAgoFarm.com. It
is also heavier, made of 1/4" wood rather than 1/8" normally
used. It will arrive already sanded and ready to paint
or stain.
Entries must be received on or before December 20, 2010.

Toasted Hazelnuts
What a great crop of hazelnuts this year! Don't let the
squirrels get 'em all
- toast them.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Lay hazelnuts in a single layer on a sheet pan.
Roast in the oven until they begin to turn golden and
smell toasty, about 8 minutes (but up to 15 to 20
minutes for larger nuts); it is better to undercook than
burn them.
To remove the skins, transfer the still-hot hazelnuts
from the oven to a paper bag or dish towel, closing it
around the nuts so they steam and the skins start to
blister away from the kernel. Rub the nuts
together in the bag or towel for several minutes.
Transfer the cooled nuts to a bowl and discard the
papery skins.

Cocoa Scones
Hot From the Oven - Yummy!
6 oz. (12 tbl.) chilled unsalted butter
2 c. flour
½ c. unsweteened Dutch-process cocoa powder
3 tbl. granulated sugar
2 tbl. light brown sugar
2 ½ tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. kosher salt
½ c. lightly toasted walnuts, chopped
1 c.
heavy whipping cream
Position oven racks in upper and lower thirds. Preheat oven
to 400 degrees. Line two baking sheets w/ parchment paper
or nonstick liners.
Cut butter into tiny pieces.
Chill in freezer about 10 minutes.
Briefly stir together flour,
cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder,
soda and salt. Add frozen butter and cut into dry mixture.
Add walnuts, stir.
Pour in cream and stir until
the dough forms a ball. Turn out dough onto a
lightly-floured surface. Knead briefly then shape into a
round or rectangle about 1 inch high. Use a round cookie
cutter (or small glass) dipped in flour to cut out scones.
Arrange on prepared sheets leaving a little room in
between. Gather dough scraps, reform and cut more.
Bake 6 minutes on the top rack then switch the baking sheets
to bottom and bake another 6-8 minutes or until a toothpick
inserted in the center comes out clean. Transfer scones to
racks to cool slightly. Serve warm with butter and jam or,
my favorite, a hazelnut-cocoa spread such as Nutella.
Scones can be reheated in a
350-degree oven for 10 to 15 minutes.

Monthly Give-Away
Congratulations to Rick K. of Zanesville, the winner of

it must have been part cashmere!
My apologies to readers of this newsletter for not having a
give-away in October and November. I'll get back on
track and have something lined up for December.
As always, thanks for reading eHonks.

eHonks Newsletter -
September 2010
Greetings!
A dry summer followed by a rainy autumn with warm days and
cool nights - that is the formula for a spectacular display
of fall colors. This year we are expecting the foliage
in southeast Ohio to be stunning. If you live in the
area, you know it to be one of the most beautiful places to
experience Fall. If you do not live here, I hope you
get to visit.
With that thought in mind...
This month's featured Showcase Listing is:

The Cottage at Windswept
A Bed
&Breakfast Retreat
If the name sounds familiar, it may be because The
Cottage at Windswept is the B&B run by Margot Justice, owner
of Windswept Alpaca Farmstead which was featured in the
February issue of eHonks.
So why is it being featured again? Several reasons. February was the very
first issue of this newsletter. At that time there weren't
many people on our mailing list so most of you have not yet
read about Windswept. Another reason is timing.
The Cottage at Windswept is nestled on a 90-acre farm in the
rolling foothills not far from the Ohio River; it is a
perfect place to stay and experience the Fall colors.
Lastly, I just returned from a visit to the farm and was
really impressed! Please let me tell you about it.
A Cozy Cottage
At first glance, the cottage doesn't appear to be anything
out of the ordinary, but inside, it is a warm and welcoming
‘home away from home’. The flooring is
beautifully-finished real oak planks. The living room
is filled with wonderful things – collectibles and antiques,
old photographs and memorabilia – yet it is not overdone.
It has comfortable furniture, tastefully arranged.
Margot encourages guests to look in every drawer and cubby
hole to discover little treasures. In the dining room
is a small gift shop full of scarves, hats, vests and
sweaters, plus bears, mice and other huggable things – all
made from alpaca fleece. There is even alpaca-shaped soap!
There is one bedroom with a double bed on the first floor.
Two double beds are in the large, open second floor.
Lovely quilts adorn each bed. The sunroom is full of books, games and old LPs that guests are welcome to play on the
phonograph.
Relaxing Get Away
Margot chatted amiably with us while making our lunch, enormous
BLTs (the Ts fresh from her garden), tortilla chips and
ginger ale in frosted glasses. She served yummy,
homemade cranberry-raisin bread for dessert. Then we
went out to sit on the large porch where we could watch the
alpacas grazing.
We had a wonderful time visiting with Margot and meeting and learning
about the alpacas. We found her to be the perfect host -
friendly, knowledgeable and interested in our comfort.
I heartily recommend you consider spending some time at
Windswept Alpaca Farmstead.

Tips & Tricks
Whether we like it or not, our personal information is
available on the Internet - checking, savings, mortgage and
loan accounts, our home, auto and health insurance records,
even our medical and prescription histories are now online.
Therefore, it is in our best interest to monitor it and take
preventative measures to...
Avoid Identity Theft - Part 1 "Monitor Your Credit Reports"
During the past 12-18 months I have been bombarded with
calls from collection agencies asking for 'Javier Cato' and 'Kimberly
Caito'. Apparently
those two have run up
credit cards, let a car and a house get repossessed, and who
knows what else. Despite the fact I have never lived in the
city where the repossessed house is located, I don't know anyone
named Javier, my first name is not 'Kimberly', and it is not me they are looking for, the collection agencies have latched onto me
and my information, including my social security number!
I had heard that you can receive free copies of credit
reports so I did some online research. The only
legitimate site for doing this is
https://www.annualcreditreport.com (if you type in the
address rather than use this link, be sure to type https not
http). It is a secure, central site that allows you to request
a free credit file disclosure once every 12 months from each
of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies:
Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
I discovered other things on my credit report that needed to
be corrected. Thankfully, all the information I needed
to get inaccurate items removed from my credit report is on
that site. It was less stressful for me to fix
problems now than if I was taken by surprise when trying to
obtain a loan! Take control of your "Life Online".

eHonks Newsletter - August 2010
Greetings!
This is the seventh issue of eHonks. It has been a
lot of fun to get together a newsletter but – wow – I had no
idea how much work it can be! For hours I plan, arrange and
rearrange, type and edit, and sometimes agonize over the
right wording. When it is finished and ready to go, I think
‘why did that take so long!?’
It is so rewarding to receive emails from readers. In
July, I reminisced a little about the hot days of summer.
Many of you responded with your own memories. Well,
the 'Dog Days of Summer' are soon upon us, the time for
harvests and county fairs. Rather than having the
regular monthly give-away, I would like to suggest a
contest.
Read about
this month's give-away contest below. But
first...
This month's featured Showcase Listing is:

Miller Woodworks
Eddie Miller,
owner
Yes, just last month you did see the Miller name.
The featured Showcase Listing was Miller's Baked
Goods, Arlene Miller. Now I would like to introduce
you to the head of the household, Eddie Miller.
Custom-made Cabinets & Furniture
When searching for handcrafted fine furniture and homes, many
people look to the Mennonite or Amish communities.
Eddie's craftsmanship is a sterling example of why this is
true. Twenty-eight years ago, he began working with his father
and brothers in the family business; in 2007 he started his
own - Miller Woodworks.
From his workshop in the northern part of Perry county, he
makes beautiful bookshelves, library tables, blanket chests,
desks, credenzas, all-wood custom-made cabinets for kitchen and bath,
and more. Every piece is sure to become a treasured
family heirloom - or - as in the case of the cabinetry,
increase the value of your home.
Delivery & Installation
Eddie will work with you, your contractor or interior
designer to make sure the cabinets match the design of your
home. He has made custom cabinets for many homes
in Ohio and surrounding states. He has even been called
upon to go as far as Chicago and Texas! If you are a
homeowner, you probably have horror stories to tell about
workers and botched jobs, but you will be delighted with
the conscientious work ethic of Miller Woodworks..

Just for Fun
Ideas for Family Fun
Progressive Euchre
If you like euchre you'll love Progressive Euchre. It
can be played with 8, 12 or 16 people, 4 persons per table.
Set up and assign each table a number. Put a euchre
deck at each table (and a bowl of chips or pretzels).
And, you need Progressive Euchre score cards which are
available online, at toy stores, or
Contact Me and I will send them via email in a Microsoft
Word document that you can print out.
Give each player a numbered score card. It tells the
player who their partner is and at what table they will
play. In each round, everyone at the table deals
twice, keeping score as in regular euchre. When the last
deal is completed, each person writes his team's score in
the spot provided on the score card. Then, move on to
the next round until all rounds are completed.
Finally, tally up your own score card - the individual with
the highest score wins.
Make up your own house rules, shorten the game by having
each person deal only once, or perhaps make it an ongoing
tournament and play full games. For younger children,
instead of euchre, set up any other board game that is
age-appropriate.

½ cup flat-leaf parsley leaves
½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
¼ cup red-wine vinegar
1 tbl rosemary
¼ tsp red-pepper flakes
½ tsp salt & ¼ tsp pepper
Chop garlic and tomatoes, parsley and rosemary. Add other

Salad
8 large portabella mushrooms
1 small red onion
2 medium yellow bell peppers
1 medium zucchini
1½ tbl extra-virgin olive oil
1½ boiling-hot water
1 cup medium bulgar
¼ cup pine nuts
2½ ounces (4 cups) baby arugula

Let stand 20 minutes, turn occasionally.
Cut onion, bell peppers, and zucchini into wedges and toss

If any water remains, drain it off.
Add the vegetables to bulgar,
add pine nuts, the remaining vinaigrette and toss.
Put one of the grilled portabellas
on a bed of arugula on a plate,
top with a mound of the vegetable-bulgar mixture, top with
another portabella.
(it will look like a sandwich).
Serve with avocado quarters. This makes 8 large or 4
small servings.

eHonks Newsletter - July 2010
Greetings!
Summer is here and how! 90-degree days and so humid.
It reminds me of long-ago summer days in the hills. We
would sit on the front porch, each with a basket full of
green beans to snap, listening to and telling stories.
I loved the evenings when it would cool a bit and steam
would rise to the tops of the hills. Bob Whites called
‘whip-o-will’, a sound I really miss. We knew when the night critters – opossum
and raccoons and such – were out because the dogs in their
kennels up the hollow sounded off with a great racket.
On still nights, the upstairs rooms were stifling and I’d
lay on top of the sheets as close to the window as possible
in hopes that just the tiniest of breezes would give a
second’s relief.
We didn’t have grapes on the family farm; we grew
strawberries, corn, green beans, cabbage, cucumbers and
more. But now is the season for Ohio vineyards to get into
busy, busy times. Next week's Communities Events issue
of eHonks (sent to those of you in Ohio) will include a list
of southeast Ohio wineries. Until I started searching
for them, I had no idea Ohio had so many – and with good
reviews!
Remember to enter to win
this month's give-away, see below.
This month's featured Showcase Listing is:

favorite! Delight in good, old-fashioned breads and
dinner rolls, wheat or white. She also makes wonderful
egg noodles that can be used as a main dish, in soups or
served cold as a salad.
There aren’t many things as delicious as homemade cinnamon
rolls with vanilla or maple icing, served warm with hot tea
or coffee or even with ice cream. She also makes fruit pies,
Amish fry-pies, cookies of all sorts and other wonderful
desserts.

"Tweet Treats" are For the Birds
These easy-to-make treats will be appreciated by your
feathered, backyard friends.
Materials
1/4 ounce package of unflavored gelatin
2 cups wild birdseed
Three 4-inch mini bundt or fluted pans
Colorful ribbon
Instructions
Bring 6 tablespoons of water to a boil. Empty one
1/4-ounce package of unflavored gelatin into 2 tablespoons
of cold water in a large bowl. Let the gelatin sit for
1 minute, then add the boiling water and stir for 2 to 3
minutes or until the gelatin has dissolved.
Next, stir 2 cups of your favorite wild birdseed into the
gelatin, mixing thoroughly. Let the mixture set for a
few minutes, then stir again. Repeat this process a
few times, if necessary, allowing the seed to absorb the
liquid. Spoon the seed mixture into three 4-inch mini
bundt or fluted pans or other small molds.
Place the pans in the refrigerator or a cool room and let
them set for at least 3 hours. Remove the 'wreaths'
from the molds by inverting the pans and tapping along the
bottoms. Allow them to air-dry overnight.
Finally, tie colorful ribbon around your wreaths and hang
them outside in a protected spot, such as under an awning or
eaves, where the rain won't melt them.

Monthly Give-Away
July 2010
Congratulations to Karen A. from Zanesville, Ohio.
She is the winner of the handcrafted key holder by Lis Smith
of The Maltese Cat.

Homemade
Soaps, Lotion Bars & "Mosquit-No"
This month's give-away is a gift from Louise Hawkins of
Apricot Hills. She has selected three homemade
soaps - 1 Rose, 1 Lilac, 1 Lily of the Valley - and three
lotion bars in the same fragrances. The soap is always
made with high-quality ingredients using the cold process
method. The lotion bars are her most popular items;
they come in so many different types and fragrances, plus
unscented.
And, she is including a stick of "Mosquit-No". It is a
pleasant-smelling, all-natural, insect-repelling lotion bar
in a handy pocket-size tube. Every evening my husband
and I walk with our dog along a rail-to-trail path.
The deer flies and mosquitoes are brutal. I tried
"Mosquit-No" and was amazed by the results – what a relief,
it really works!
Entries must be received on or before July 28, 2010.

eHonks Newsletter - June 2010
Greetings!
Can you believe it!? The
kids are out of school and June is here. The heat and
thunderstorms have come with it. In Ohio, that means it is
time for classic car cruise-ins and readying entries for the
county fair.
Next week's Communities
Events issue of eHonks (sent to those of you in Ohio) will
include a list of all the southeast Ohio county fairs.
Remember to enter to win this month's give-away, see below.
This month's featured Showcase Listing is:

Image Computer Solutions,
Inc.
Allan May, owner
Skilled
technicians provide computer and printer repair, Internet
services, consultations, and on-site and remote services for
large and small businesses as well as the home user.
Data Backup &
Local Storage
Many people think
data backup and storage is a business’ concern. Today more
than ever, it is just as important for the home computer
user. Think of all the information stored on your computer –
pictures of family and friends, music, address book, emails
and letters, a recipe collection, bookkeeping for a
home-based business or hobby income, personal financial
information, income tax records, bank statements. What
would you do if it was all lost and irretrievable?
Protect your data
against loss due to accidents, deletions, theft or
disasters. Image Computer Solutions provides a simple,
affordable, secure data backup and storage solution.
eBay Selling
Service
This service is more than just having someone list on eBay
for you. Research will be done to determine the potential
value of your items and the likelihood of a sale.

Board Games and Card Games, Dominos or Marbles – if you want
to know how to play, visit this section of the About.com web
site. Find either a synopsis of play or complete game
rules, suggested age group, game reviews, photos, and
related articles. Did you know “If Wishes Were Fishes” made
the Top 10 list at the 2007 World Boardgaming
Championships!? I’m wondering if that wasn’t because the
game comes with wood fish and 30 purple rubber worms, hmmm.
The only thing I do not like about this site is that there
are many ads (usually at the right of the screen) but they
are marked as such and easily ignored. If you really like
games, sign up for their newsletter which contains game
reviews, histories, news and events, inventor resources,

eHonks Newsletter - May 2010
Greetings!
Why is it that no matter how many times I check and recheck
my typing, dates and details, I make the biggest mistakes!
This is indeed the MAY issue, not a copy of the APRIL
issue. Please forgive me for sending two copies but I
didn't want you to trash this issue thinking it was a
duplicate.
So, after almost two months of life getting in the way of
things I need to accomplish, I'm back in the swing of things
and focusing on building DonkeyHonk.com into a useful tool
for you.
Instead of reaching for yellow page type books that give
only a small snapshot of area providers, or searching Google
and wading through too many results, DonkeyHonk.com is a
directory showing goods and service providers for the
southeast Ohio area. Please add DonkeyHonk.com to your
Favorites/Bookmarks and check it often as it grows.
Remember to enter to win this month's give-away, see below.
This month's featured Showcase Listing is:

Marietta Run Clay
(Bluebird Pottery)
Susan Sherman, owner
A
visit to Marietta Run Clay, known as the Bluebird Pottery,
is more than a shopping trip - it's an experience! Even
before setting a foot inside, the little blue building with
yellow shutters and surrounded by beautiful perennial beds
is a treat for the eyes.
Pottery Tour
Once inside you will immediately be made welcome and begin
your 'pottery experience'. Susan gives a complete tour,
explaining how clay is processed and made ready to go on the
wheel. She also describes the steps each piece must go
through before it is a finished work of art. Then, she
offers a free 10-minute lesson on a potter's wheel to any
willing participant. Or, you may select and paint a piece
which Susan will later fire and ship to you when it is
ready.
Two Bluebird Mugs
For this month's giveaway Susan donated two artist-signed,
hand-thrown stoneware mugs painted with her famous Bluebird
design (as seen on the mini-dish pictured above). These
wonderful mugs hold approximately 10-12 ounces, are
beautiful, sturdy, easy to hold, and dishwasher safe. Click
here to Enter-to-Win.

Flashlight Night
Push aside the furniture so you can sit on the floor, maybe
get some fluffy pillows. Turn off the ringer on your home
phone, put all cell phones on silent, give each person a
flashlight, then turn off all the lights (to keep from
cheating, turn off the electricity at the breaker box).
Ready? Now, tell stories! Kids love to hear about when you
were little, your first day of school, or a most
embarrassing moment. If you just can't think of a story,
read "Green Eggs & Ham" or sing silly songs.
It doesn't have to be a long time, just an hour. But you
and your family will be making great memories. And, it's
FREE. Well, remember to buy batteries.

May 28-31 - Reinersville Trader Days - McConnelsville, OH
About 800 vendors from across the Midwest will converge on
this little Morgan county community to set up shop - buying,
selling or bartering all manner of goods from guns and
knives to hunting dogs, antiques, handcrafted goods, more.
For over 35 years this once local swap meet now attracts a
diverse group of buyers and sellers from all over. This is
not a typical flea market; it is the third largest swappers'
meet in Ohio. There is a pony pull on Saturday at 1:00
p.m. And, wonderful food!

Dirt Boys ATV
Gary Cooper, owner

destroy both tire and rim.
Spare Tire Holder
There are several models to fit many makes of ATV - Honda
Rincon, Yamaha Grizzly, Polaris Sportsman and Polaris
Sportsman Touring, just to name a few. Installs easily with

eHonks Newsletter - March 2010
Greetings!
There was a
great response to the first eHonks newsletter. Thanks to
all those who took the time to send feedback and ideas.
This month's featured Showcase Listings are:

Hank's Lawn Care
Henry Hood, owner
Henry 'Hank' Hood is a husband, father of four, and a
substitute teacher. For years he has enjoyed helping
children reach their academic potential. He offers tutoring
for students in grades 7-12 at very affordable rates.
Lawn Care Services & More
Springtime yard cleanup and preparation make future chores
such as mowing easier. Winter leaves behind detritus that
needs to be removed - leaves, twigs and branches, things
blown into the yard. Flower beds need cleared out and
re-mulched, leaves left over from fall need cleared away
from foundations and downspouts. It is also a great time to
clean out things that have accumulated in the garage and
barn.
Hank can help you out with all this and more. In addition to
yard cleanup, he can continue regular mowing and upkeep for
you during the summer months. If you have need of light
hauling or other odd jobs, call Hank for service in
Lancaster and surrounding Fairfield county neighborhoods.
FREE Recycling Bin for Aluminum Cans
Be sure to ask about this wonderful 'green' service he
provides.

Apricot Hills
Louise Hawkins, owner
Louise Hawkins has been living in southeast Ohio now for
about 15 years.
She suffers with eczema and had very little success finding
products that relieved the itching and other symptoms. After
research, she started making her own high-quality soap and
lotion.
Her friends and relatives enjoyed receiving her items as
gifts. So much so that they started asking to buy the soap
and lotion as gifts for others. Her business was born,
Apricot Hills.
Lotion Bars
These are her most popular items. They contain sweet almond
oil, shea butter, beeswax, cocoa butter, vitamin E. There
are six all-natural and more than 70 fragrances from which
to choose.
Homemade Soap
Select from more than 25 types of soaps - fragrance or
fragrance-free, vegan or non-vegan - all made without
detergents or hardners. Once you feel the creamy lather you
will never want to use commercially-prepared bath bars
again!

introduce you to others in this area.
Future Newsletters, eHonks
Future eHonks
newsletters will come from DonkeyHonk.com. The two sites
complement each other so I decided to combine the
information for each into one newsletter. Each future issue
should have at least one special offer or coupon, a combined
calendar of events, and a new ‘Just for Fun’ section.
Down on the Long Time Ago
Farm
We are sitting under about
8-10" snow with more to come tonight. The donkeys are
refusing to come out of the barn because they don't like
stepping in the snow. Because they are bored, they are
fighting and picking on one another like teenagers in the
back seat of a car, especially Rocket Man and Nettie. We
put Rupert’s dog house on the porch to give him a little
more protection from the wind and filled it with hay. If
you peek inside the door you will find the two cats draped
over him like a blanket.

Windswept Alpaca Farmstead
Little Hocking, OH
Recently
featured in Southeast Ohio magazine, Windswept Alpaca
Farmstead is a must-see. Margot Justice is the owner of the
farm in Little Hocking, Ohio. She raises Suri alpaca. Her
breeding practices focus on excellence in confirmation and
fiber. Farm visits are welcomed. She will delight you with
information about these beautiful animals.
Cottage at Windswept, a
Bed & Breakfast Retreat
Ok, maybe you're
not in the market for an alpaca of your own. I do suggest
making a reservation now at the Cottage at Windswept
because babies, called crias, are due in May. You may just
get to see a little one arrive!
Enjoy breakfasts of
farm-fresh eggs and Margot's homemade sticky buns. Many
never leave the farm during their stay, choosing instead to
sit on the front porch and watch the alpaca grazing. If you
do choose to go antiquing or sightseeing, you might cross
the Ohio River into West Virginia to visit Fenton Glass or
have lunch on the sternwheeler to Blennerhassett Island.
Consider visiting Windswept
Alpaca Farmstead as a family day-outing or for a quiet
weekend getaway. Guests can use free wi-fi and the local
Parkersburg News newspaper. Pets are welcome.
"Tails of Windswept Farm"
"Tails of Windswept Farm" is
a book of stories as told by Alfie the alpaca, written by
Margot Justice and illustrated by J. D. Williamson. It is a
delightful read. You can pick up a copy at the gift shop
along with many other alpaca items.

Greetings!
Finally, the first issue of eHonks. I have read and re-read this
many times but know that the moment I hit [Send] some glaringly
obvious mistake will leap out of the page. So in advance my
apologies to anyone whose name is butchered or omitted. Otherwise,
I hope you will find it enjoyable and look forward to reading future
issues. Each month, one or two of the Showcase Listings will
be featured. Starting with the March issue a Calendar of Events
will be added.

email addresses to which you forward.
Did someone forward this email to you? THANK YOU for not deleting
it! I hope you take a moment to visit DonkeyHonk.som. If you

Just for Fun
Ideas for the Whole Family
Have a 'Thank You for Being a Friend' Party
Make up a guest list of dearest family members or friends, new and
old. Think of something each has done or said for which you have
never said thanks. On a note card or paper write, "I thank you for
being a friend because... " and fill the rest. Place each note in
an envelope addressed to each guest and write his/her on the outside
in easy-to-read letters.
Get some helium-filled balloons, bright ribbon or string, and
something to weigh down each balloon. Attach a balloon to each
envelope using the ribbon, cutting each length of ribbon so that the
balloons are about head-high or slightly above then place them
around the room. Or you might put all envelopes on a table making a
balloon bouquet. At some point during your party, encourage each
guest to find the balloon and envelope with his name on it.
Who Can Advertise on
DonkeyHonk.com?
You do not have to be 'big-time' to need advertising. Do you make
and sell quilts, renovate tractors, paint barns, clean gutters? Get
your name out there with a FREE listing on the home page.
Want something more? A Showcase Listing is a very affordable way to
get on the web. It is, in essence, a one-page web site with a
contact us online form without the expenses of buying and keeping a
domain name, hosting, plus design and development. If you do have
your own web site, a Showcase Listing on DonkeyHonk.com will help
direct people to your site. Read more about
Showcase Listings
or contact us
for more information.
